With heavy hearts we mourn the loss of our beloved elder Margaret Roberts. Margaret was an Alutiiq leader who advocated tirelessly for our people. She was one of the founding members of the Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak and The Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers who flourished under her guidance. Her compassion and dedication to the Sugpiaq people of our region will never be forgotten. She set a shining example for future generations that will be her forever legacy. We love you Margaret and send our prayers to her family.

Grant Awarded for Kodiak Alutiiq Language Master Apprentice Program

Sun’aq Tribe is pleased to announce we have been awarded a three-year grant to create a Kodiak Alutiiq Language Master Apprentice Program. This apprenticeship program will increase language fluency capacity to our community and implement and build further on language programs for the Alutiiq Nation in whole.

The tribe will pilot a 33-month master apprentice program focused on building second language speaker-teacher fluency and certification. The Kodiak Alutiiq Language Master Apprentice Program (KALMAP) will produce a Fluency Path Freeway for apprentices to achieve a novice to advanced proficiency in Alutiiq Language and in the end graduate 6 Alutiiq speaker-teachers. Our apprentices will graduate with multiple certifications such as Type M certified teachers, Child Care Development Associates and OEC graduates.

Koniag Alutiiq Dialect has only a few active intermediate speaker-teachers stretched between the current immersion teaching positions, with high demand for expansion and no means for second language speakers to achieve advanced fluency. We are enthused to be able to start the KALMAP program to produce additional speaker-teachers for our community and Alutiiq language instruction.

The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak will partner with many organizations to use all our adequate Alutiiq resources to help achievement and succession in the Kodiak Alutiiq Master Apprentice Program. These partnerships include: The Alutiiq Musuem, The QIK committee, Elders Speakers, The Kodiak College, Koniag, First Alaska Institute and more.

We are excited and honored to pilot the Kodiak Alutiiq Language Master Apprentice Program in Kodiak. If you would like to apply to be a Master Apprentice or would like to learn more about the program, please contact The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak and ask to speak with Hailey Thompson or email her at haileyt@sunaq.org
