The Alutiiq people traditionally passed on knowledge about their heritage and everyday life through dance and song. The dancers are dedicated to honoring our ancestors by bringing to life our traditional songs and dances.

About us
The Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers started in 1987, with our first performance in 1989. Since then, we have performed far and wide, including the Goodwill Games opening ceremonies in 1990, Gathering of Nations Powwow in New Mexico, St. Petersburg Russia, and the Intertribal Powwow in Hilo, Hawaii.
Our current group of dancers, who range from toddlers to adults, meets weekly to learn and practice songs, make and mend regalia and host fundraising events. The Dancers are coordinated from the Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak, in partnership with the Native Village of Afognak, and Woody Island Tribal Council.
Regalia
The regalia worn during performances are replicas of traditional clothing which is housed in museums all over the world. These dresses are aptly called the snow falling parka. Just a couple hundred years ago, the regalia we wear would have been made from bird skins, adorned with puffin beaks, and marine mammal intestine and esophagus. Our regalia is made by our members and many community members. We also wear replicas of beaded headdresses, and headdresses in a contemporary style.
Performances
The Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers perform for diverse audiences, and even travel to events, large and small. If you would like to request the dancers perform at an event, please fill out the Performance Request form and email it to kodiakdancers at sunaq.org
The money raised by the dancers (including performance fees) goes directly toward the dancer’s expenses which include creating and repairing regalia and travel to events. We also do informational performances for the schools free of charge, to teach the community about our culture. We welcome community members who would like to become part of our dance group.
