Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill

On March 24, 1989, the Exxon-Valdez oil tanker ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, spilling an estimated 11 million gallons of crude oil across 1,300 miles of coastline.

This caused catastrophic harm to the centuries old subsistence lifestyle practiced by native tribes in Kodiak and all throughout the area.

On August 9, 1989, the Kodiak Tribal Council passed Resolution 89-10, which authorized two designated representatives to act on behalf of the village to reduce oil spill impact.
