The Alutiiq people traditionally passed on knowledge about their heritage and everyday life through dance and song. The Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers are dedicated to honoring our ancestors by bringing to life our traditional songs and dances.

The Sun’aq ethics of harvesting are based upon respect:  treating the outdoors, the plants, animal and fish, and each other with respect.

The gathering, hunting, fishing, preserving, and eating of traditional foods is more than just subsistence for the Sun’aq people.  It is a way of life.

With funding from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak acts as the representative for all of the Kodiak Archipelago Tribes on the Kodiak Archipelago Regional Management Body for the Alaska Migratory Birds Co-Management Council.

In August 2017, Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak was awarded funding by USFWS Tribal Wildlife Grant (TWG) Program for a two-year project, titled “Distribution, Movement and Diet of Invasive Crayfish Populations in Buskin River Watershed on Kodiak Island, Alaska.”

In Kodiak, Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) are not native to the Island and they have the potential to damage salmon habitat throughout Kodiak Island. The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak Natural Resources Department (NRD) is working towards learning more about and stopping the spread of this invasive species.

Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak is collaborating with two organizations to learn more about the PSP levels in butter clams within the city of Kodiak.

Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak (STK) Natural Resources Department received funding from Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Youth Initiative Program to engage Tribal youth in natural resources management through fieldwork and data collection on Kodiak Archipelago.
