The Tribal Name is Officially Changed

The Tribal name is officially changed from Shoonaq' Tribe of Kodiak to Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak. Linguists from the University of Alaska Native Language Center developed an Alutiiq language alphabet while working with language specialists at the Qik'rtarmiut Alutiiq Language Revitalization Program.

Through collaboration with the tribe, it was determined that changing the spelling from Shoonaq' to Sun'aq would reflect a more accurate spelling of the name as pronounced in accordance with the Alutiiq alphabet.
